New Illustration

copyright 2013 Teresa Wiles

This image was inspired by a book I recently finished. I went for a traditional style along the lines of Jules Verne.  The image was first draw in detail and then colored in Photoshop. The bubbles were added as an afterthought.

I made this cat using the "Procreate"app on the IPad 2.  This was my first try at drawing with the stylus on the IPad.

This piece, based on a character I created is for a video I am making.  The medium is colored pencil on black paper.  I like the looseness of the strokes which is very different from my most recent techniques.  He's a big fan of zombie movies.

Illustration Friday
"Storm"
copyright 2013 Teresa Wiles

This is from an image I created many years ago where I wanted to experiment with materials.  The board I used as a ground was acid free corrugated that was painted with a black gouache as a base for the drawing.  At the time I made several drawings with this ground and was pleased with the result.  For this weeks topic I cropped the piece from the original and added color overlays and the swirls to create a sense of wind and motion. A further experiment.

SCBWI Tomie de Paola entry!
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain

copyright 2012 Teresa Wiles
This is my illustration for Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer".  Entries for the annual contest could be based on text from Tom Sawyer, "The Yearling" by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, or "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott.  The entries were also required to be rendered in black and white. Working in black and white was a challenge for me because of my love of color. I considered creating the figures as black silhouettes but decided on this reverse use of light against dark to create contrast and heighten the focal point on the figures.

"Sub Girl"
This is a recent illustrationI have been working on, practicing my Photoshop techniques. I created it using an original watercolor and colored pencil image. Next, I added layers of my drawings then I played with color in areas and added layer styles. The numerous brushes and combinations of effects in addition to the ability to make changes is wonderful.
